General Problems with 56K
Since the 56k modem was released people have found that the connection speed for the 56k does not run at this speed. The reason why a 56k modem can not run at 56k depends on the connection of your line. Even if you are on the digital exchange at some point your transfer will hit a analog exchange causing the speed to lower due to line noise the analog line creates. When sending a signal down a telephone line it requires electrical power, however the more power which is applied to the line, the greater the chance of a problem called crosstalk. You may have experienced crosstalk before, this is when you are using your telephone and you pick up on someone else's conversation. To prevent this the telephone company will have limited the amount of power used to send signals over the network. This limits the speed that the modem can transfer at. We have estimated that the maximum any user can get is about 50kbps. Please visit our Users Guide for more information.

How fast does 56K really go?
All data transferred in has a maximum speed of 56k, however data transferred out will only go at a maximum speed of 33.6k or less. Depending on the area you live in depends on the speed you get. Areas with poor line quality might only get download speeds of 33.6kbps (or less) while other areas might get speeds from 40kbps up. For more information, visit http://www.56k.com.
